MOJO
MOJO MOJO: Probably African in origin. Definition: A magic charm or spell. An amulet, often a small flannel bag containing one or more magic items, worn by adherents of hoodoo or voodoo. Personal magnetism; charm. Marshall Goldsmith, is the author of MOJO: How to Get It, How to Keep It, and How to Get It Back If You Lose It. He might not have been thinking about careers, but MOJO is a necessary component of your job search as well. Here is Marshalls take on the four essential components of MOJO. Identity: If MOJO is that positive spirit toward what you are doing that starts from the inside and radiates to the outside, identity is the definition of you. The way that we define ourselves â" as human beings â" can either enhance or destroy our MOJO. Achievement: In MOJO we add a new twist to the concept of achievement. We look at achievement as not only what you bring to any activity (motivation, knowledge, ability, confidence and authenticity), we also look at what the activity brings to you (happiness, rewards, meaning, learning and gratitude). Both elements of achievement are needed for great MOJO. Reputation: Our reputation is determined by how the rest of the world defines us. If we are engaged in activities that involve influencing other people (and most of us, for most of the time, are), then our reputation will impact our MOJO. Reputation is much harder to change than behavior and reputational change can only be achieved over time. Acceptance: A key to maintaining MOJO is learning to change what you can change and to accept what you cannot change. For example, Peter Drucker taught me to accept the fact that every decision is made by the person who has the power to make that decision (not the ârightâ person or the âfairâ person). Few people deeply internalize this simple point. Once we accept that decision makers are our customers and learn to influence them in the most positive possible way we increase both our personal happiness and our organizational meaning. Do you have MOJO? If not, how can you get your MOJO back? More on these topics later.

How to Allocate Your Time Wisely
How to Allocate Your Time Wisely We cant manage time, but we can manage how we use our time. Here is how to allocate your time wisely during your job search and beyond. I dont know about you, but there just arent enough hours in the day to do everything I want to and should do! Time is a precious commodity and you and I both squander it. Lets get serious about taking control of how we spend our time! If you are saying, Nope, not me, Ive got a system in place then I envy you! But most of us do struggle with how to allocate our time wisely. Im not a slacker, nor are you. Theres the overflowing laundry basket of clean clothes sitting on the floor in my bedroom that has been gnawing at me for two days. Then there is the sink filled with dishes and a clean dishwasher that needs to be unloaded. And lets not forget the emails I have to respond to, the projects for work that are half completed and a host of other to dos that I carry in my mind and written down on scraps of paper somewhere! Does any of this sound familiar? Procrastination This is me! I am the queen of procrastination. I wait until the last minute to do everything. It wouldnt be so bad if I didnt worry about the deadlines, but I do and that causes stress. But I have a secret I have been using. Do you want to hear it? First, I want to thank all the folks who help me with this, whether they know it or not! I partner up with people who are doers. I purposely seek out and hang with people who do not procrastinate. After I have confessed my problem with procrastination to them, I enlist their help in holding me accountable. I share my due dates with them and know that once Ive done that, I cant let them down. Who is holding you accountable for doing the things you need to do? There is no excuse why you cant find an accountability partner. Zero. If you procrastinate, go find one today! Over Commit I sign up for way too many things- events and volunteer projects that seem great at the time. I do this because I do want to help and in some cases I am flattered someone asked me for help. However, most of the commitments I make are interesting but not critical to my focus and mission. Yes, they usually make me feel good, but at the end I usually feel they werent the best use of my time which, of course, causes more stress. The magic formula is to just say NO. This is difficult. But at the end of the day, you need to feel like you have used your time well, without guilt. If saying no flat out is difficult, you could say something like, I would love to but cant. Have you thought about asking Betty Sue? She might be a great resource. Excuses I make excuses to justify how I spend my time on frivolous projects or taking too much time to do things. But I know the truth. I wasted my time and unless I put a mechanism in place, Ill do it again. Gain Control and Allocate Your Time Wisely Be Realistic If your to-do list is 100 items long, you will never get through it. Be real. If you regularly cant get through all the items on your to-do list, either you have too many or the action item is too big. Chunk down big to-dos into smaller pieces. Work in Small Increments at a Time Set a timer and work in 45-60 minute intervals. Chose the task you want to conquer and go! This is supposed to keep you focused. Reward yourself with a 5-10 minute break and repeat! Have you heard of the Pomodoro Technique? Use a Calendar Use blocks of time on your calendar for every to-do item. If you dont block it off, guess what? Other emergencies crop up and take your time and at the end of the day you often wonderwhere did the day go! Structure Your Week Tame the Email Beast The biggest time-waster is email. There is absolutely no reason you need to check it all the time. Experts advise checking it twice a day. And set a timer, I might add. Give yourself a specific amount of time to sift through your inbox. Using your phone to check email is just as dangerous. Consider turning off email on your phone during times you need to focus.

Self Improvement 101...who teaches this
Self Improvement 101...who teaches this There are thousands of self improvement/self help books on the shelves of every bookstore in the country. (Who knows, this whole concept of buying a book in a store may change one day). The topics range from communication differences, managing emotions, financial health, new age wellness. Do people really read these books or do they buy them and let them sit. It has to make you wonder, doesnt it? Over in England, they are going to be teaching skills in job search, personal financial management, a form of home economics and basic survival skills to children. These children are from families with a long-running history of being on the dole. The hope is that by teaching them some of these life skills they will break the chain and become working contributors. Ive been scratching my head for years now wondering why our schools dont teach self improvement classes. Anger management, communication, etiquette, etc are typically things that have been taught in the home, however, what if that isnt happening consistently? The most consistent aspect of a childs life is school. I can still remember one math class in Junior High included check writing and balancing the checkbook. This was a helpful thing to know back then. Obviously with the budget issues, these extra curricular topics cant be addressed as stand alone classes, but can it happen as part of a history discussion or social studies current event topic? The mental and physical health of our youth depends on the development of these life skills. Someone prove me wrong, let me know that I am delusional.
